Breast Cancer Awareness Month
We’re wearing pink this October
About 1 in 8 women in the U.S. will develop breast cancer in her lifetime, and catching it early changes how the story goes. We’re a small local shop, not a charity — we aren’t collecting donations and we don’t represent any organization. We just think the reminder is worth passing along to our neighbors.
If cost is what’s stopping you: the Florida Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program provides free or low-cost mammograms and clinical breast exams to eligible Florida residents age 40+ with limited or no health insurance. Check eligibility and find your county contact, or call 850-245-4144.
Lifetime-risk figure: American Cancer Society. Speedy Tech Solutions is not affiliated with, sponsored by, or endorsed by any breast cancer charity or foundation.
American Diabetes Month
Why this month is personal for us
I’m Dakota, and this one is close to home. My dad lived with type 2 diabetes. My daughter lives with type 1. I’ve seen what both look like up close, and I’d rather you catch it early than find out the hard way.
About 40 million Americans have diabetes, and 11 million of them don’t know it yet. Type 1 is a different thing altogether — it isn’t caused by diet or lifestyle, it can’t be prevented, and more than 300,000 kids in this country are living with it. World Diabetes Day is November 14.
Know the warning signs of type 1 in a child. They can come on in a matter of weeks:
- Extreme thirst, and far more trips to the bathroom than usual — or new bedwetting in a child who had stopped
- Losing weight with no explanation, while hungry all the time
- Worn out, irritable, or not themselves
- Blurry vision, or breath that smells sweet or fruity
If you see these in your child, get a same-day appointment or go to urgent care. Don’t wait it out.
Worried about type 2 for yourself? The American Diabetes Association has a free 60-second risk test. It takes less time than reading this.
